Update Fall 2017

CanDo CanGrow had its beginning at the Napa Food Day held in the fall of 2013. At that event, CanDo volunteers and members of Napa County Master Gardeners realized that our Food Banks are in need of more fresh, organic, produce for their clients. Thus, CanDo CanGrow (CDCG) was born as a project of Napa Valley CanDo.

Since the spring of 2014, the CDCG Food Bank garden has been located on space donated by the Napa Community Garden in north Napa. That first year we grew 1,533 pounds of fresh summer vegetables which were donated to the Food Pantry on Yajome Street in downtown Napa through the Napa Food Bank.

Since then, our donations to the Food Bank have consistently increased to an average of 2,000 lbs. per year during the growing seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017. Our cadre of volunteers has also grown. We are now a small but dedicated group that shows up to the garden regularly, at least once a week during the growing season. In addition, we've had lots of help with both garden work and donations from many community organizations, including other local nonprofits, scouts, church groups, winery groups, and out-of-town corporate volunteers.

Sadly, the Community Garden where our Food Bank plot has been located is closing down at the end of December 2017. But here's the good news:  we've been offered a new, much larger garden area behind Covenant Presbyterian Church on Salvador Avenue in north Napa. We'll be sharing this space with another local nonprofit, Latinos Unidos, who already grew summer vegetables for its members this season.

In conjunction with Latinos Unidos and Covenant Presbyterian Church, CanDo CanGrow is now in the process of planning and creating this beautiful garden. There is much to be done in the coming months:  preparing the soil, moving our garden equipment from the old space to the new one, and installing a new garden shed, raised beds, irrigation, fencing, and more. We're excited about the potential offered in this generous new space, and we welcome any and all support in the creation of a beautiful new garden that will provide even more fresh, organic, local produce to our neighbors in need.
